DON MARSHALL MACLEAN STUDIO
Don Maclean is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice span the visual arts, film, music as well as fashion. He received a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and has exhibited internationally in museums and galleries including Miami Art Basel, Greengrassi Gallery (London), Tony Shafrazi Gallery (New York City), Secession Museum (Vienna), Althea Viafora Gallery (New York City), Oakland Museum (California) and Daniel Newberg Gallery (New York City).
Maclean’s story begins with water. Before the age of seven, he drowned twice, and his near-death experiences changed him forever. The water that nearly took his life, also gifted him with an intense creative drive and a unique awareness of the past, present and future that guides his art to this day which reflects in Maclean’s circuitous experience of life and time.
A rebellious adolescence primed him for a career in the heart of San Francisco’s rock ‘n roll scene, while at the same time, Maclean attended the San Francisco Art Institute, California College of Arts and Craft and San Francisco State University. Maclean studied under these notable artists: Doug Hall, Howard Fried, Sam Tchakalian, Robert Bechtle, Richard McLean, Stephen De Stabler and John Roloff. Guest artists that influenced Maclean included: Paul McCarthy, Buckminster Fuller, Vito Acconici, Chris Burden, Laurie Anderson and David Ireland to name a few.
Once in New York City, Maclean apprenticed for a slew of artists including Dennis Oppenheim, Keith Sonnier, Olivier Mosset and Vito Acconci. It was during this time Maclean began exhibiting his paintings and sculptures in galleries and venues in New York City.
Maclean’s creative current could not be contained to a single medium or industry, so he went on to design streetwear. His brand, MacFresh Clothing, sold alongside Stussy and FUBU at major retail outlets in the United States and gained attention on national television and various Rap and Hip Hop publications.
Maclean artwork has consistently been called “ahead of its time” and is often difficult to categorize. His art is influenced by everything from Surrealism to the Dutch Golden Age to Psychedelia, Conceptual art and music. In recent years, Maclean’s vast career has culminated in a recommitment to his art practice, honoring once again his ever-flowing creative current.
